Upcoming local blood drives
A large silver maple tree fell during storms on Thursday, April 25 and into the early morning hours of Friday, April 26 in Sedalia. The tree barely missed a home in the 1100 block of State Fair Boulevard. More storms are predicted for Saturday, April 27 and Sunday, April 28.

After the thunderstorms that hit Sedalia on Thursday, April 25 and in the early morning hours of Friday, April 26, Sedalians woke up to many trees and limbs down across the city.

Smith-Cotton check in: Tigers golf places fifth at CMAC Championship

Smith-Cotton senior Dayne Hart tees off at the Smith-Cotton Classic golf tournament on April 8 at Sedalia Country Club. Hart shot a 98 at the CMAC Championship Wednesday.

New sports editor joins Democrat staff

The Sedalia Democrat has welcomed a new sports editor in the newsroom.
Angel Hughes has been working at Steak 'n Shake for six months and said the job has given her better skills in communication, problem solving and customer interaction. A paycheck and new friends come with the job as well.

As schools prepare to let students out for summer vacation, many are preparing to look for jobs.

The program began five years ago and helps area high school students learn how to balance their bills with their salaries. The Housing table volunteers were all Sedalia real estate agents.

What a week!

Summers of my past

The sun was shining through my window, and I could feel its warmth through the windowpane; outside, the grass was past mowing size and looked like a big green bedspread covering my yard.

When the eagle landed

No, this piece isn’t about Neil Armstrong’s famous words to NASA when he and Buzz Aldrin landed on the moon nearly 55 years ago. Instead, it refers to what happened during breakfast several weeks ago when Gary and I glanced out into our backyard to see a bald eagle on the ground alongside our small lake. He was devouring a squirrel and appearing to enjoy every bite.
